JOB DESCRIPTION
PUBLIC WORKS MAINTENANCE WORKER II
Department: Public Works
Pay Grade: 104.5
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt
GENERAL PURPOSE
A heavy equipment operator works independently and with crews, and is responsible for operating
equipment associated with maintenance and repair activities. Duties include operation and minor
maintenance of a wide variety of heavy equipment and providing training and work direction to
others. Equipment includes but is not limited to backhoes, excavating machinery, dump trucks, skid
steers, street sweepers, and other large vehicles.
Also performs routine duties normally involving physical labor for the maintenance of City streets and
rights-of-way, sidewalks, storm drainage systems, parks, and general facilities. Works with field crew
personnel and performs skilled work in construction, maintenance, and related service activities.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED
Works under the general supervision of the Facility Supervisor, who assigns major tasks and duties.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

1. Operate a wide variety of heavy equipment. Operate and maintain auxiliary mechanical
equipment, electronics and attachments used with heavy equipment.
2. Perform routine inspection and maintenance on vehicles such as checking oil, water and tires.
3. Ensure all equipment is maintained and used in accordance with health and safety
regulations.
4. Provide training in the safe operation of equipment. Assist and lead coworkers to complete
work assignments.
5. Perform routine maintenance and repairs.
6. Load, unload, lift and move a variety of materials and equipment.
7. May be subject to emergency call out during non-working hours to include nights, weekends
and holidays.
8. Work as part of a maintenance crew. May clean streets, parks, and rights-of-way of general
debris, cuts grass, applies pesticide, and trims shrubs, trees, and other vegetation along street

rights-of-way, plants, waters, and maintains landscaped areas, and maintains striping and
signage within rights-of-way.
9. Operate a variety of tools, such as a jackhammer, tamper, lawn mower, and carpentry tools.
10. Assist in the overall maintenance and repair of City-owned equipment and facilities, including
buildings.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is
qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
1. Education: High School Diploma or equivalent.
2. Experience: Two years’ experience in the directly related to the duties and responsibilities
specified.
3. Certifications/Licenses:
• Valid Washington State driver’s license with a driving record free from serious or frequent
violations.
• Valid Washington State Commercial Driver’s License.
• Within six (6) months of employment, required to obtain and maintain a Pesticide
Applicator License, an Industrial First Aid/CPR Card and a Flagging and Traffic Control Card.
• Within one (1) year of employment, required to obtain Blood Borne Pathogens, Defensive
Driving, Confined Space, Fall Protection, Fire Extinguisher and Evacuation, and Trenching
and Shoring training.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of:
• Principles, practices and standards for operation, care and maintenance of heavy equipment.
• Operation of public works systems.
• The requirements to operate machinery in a safe manner.
Skills/Abilities:
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, contractors, and the
general public.
• Communicate respectfully and tactfully with co-workers and customers (internal and external).
• Follow instructions.
• Critical thinking, problem solving and ability to make decisions that prevent accidents and damage
to property.
• Use small office equipment and computers.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is performed in an outdoor environment, in all weather conditions and terrains. Work may likely
expose the employee to inclement weather and safety hazards such as falling objects, noise and
vibration, dust and dirt, fumes and odor and potentially hazardous materials and equipment,.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
• Heavy work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 25 pounds
frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
• Must possess the visual ability to see clearly at close (less than 20 inches) and far (20 feet or more)
distances, identify and distinguish colors, observe an area that can be seen up and down or the left
and right while eyes are fixed on a given point, judge distances and spatial relationships, and adjust
the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
• Prolonged periods of operating heavy machinery.
• Good motor coordination and depth perception, climbing, lifting and bending. Requires use of hand
and foot controls and sustaining significant amount of vibration.
